Dear Friends of St Peter's, Ugborough

Newsletter Number 2. 21/10/2010

Firstly, thank you to Taff, Philomena and the cast of Under Milk Wood, for such a wonderful production and enjoyable evening (s). The event raised around £1200; not all the income and expenditure has yet been finalised  but it was certainly a fantastic success.

Secondly, thank you to everyone who replied to my questions about the future of the Friends of St Peter's. The ovewhelming conclusion was that the Friends should continue but there were few people who could commit to helping out with organisation.

Following your responses, the committee met on Tuesday evening and had an open discussion about the nature and purpose of the the FSP. We concluded that:

1. FSP would continue next year, under the chairmanship of Philip Mann. Thanks to Philip for taking on the role.

2. FSP should continue its 'mission' of combining fundraising with social events and  furthering the historical study of Ugborough Church.

3. There needed to be a clearer lead on fund raising projects from the PCC, in liaison with the committee of FSP. FSP needs a clearly identified project and target towards which to work; this will add purpose and direction to its fund raising activities. For example, if the next priority of the PCC is to install a new heating system, then FSP could be asked to contribute towards this - and even to contribute a specific sum. FSP is not there to raise general funds for the church - that is the work of the PCC - but to assist with specific, clearly identified projects.

4. There need to be clearer benefits for people who pay a subscription to FSP. For example, members should receive a reduction in ticket price for fund raising events.

5. FSP could help to improve the literature available on the History of the church eg guides for children, detailed - and well-produced - materials on specific aspects such as the screens, windows etc. These can then be sold to visitors.

6. Above all, we could use some more man and woman power to help with the logistics of organising events. We can just about cope with small-scale talks and concerts but if more ambitious events were to be held, this would require more assistance.

We are going to combine the AGM and Jonathan Week's concert in late November. So, a date for your diaries:

27 November Jonathan Weeks 'Medieval Music and Song Part II - Strings'
7pm AGM
7.30pm Concert.

Tickets: £5 ordinary price; £3 members.

Best wishes,
Liz
